- Game Review
Doukutsu Monogatari. What a name. Perhaps it's easier to just call it by it's english name - Cave Story. Or perhaps we'll just use the first word of the original name - Doukutsu. This game struck me as being awkward at first, impressive at second, and engrossing at last. I'll try to explain why, but forgive me the fanboyism - I really fell in love with this game. The game starts off with a simple animation, and some general exposition. What the game is about or what you're supposed to do - hell, even who you are is initially left in the dark. You start our in a cave. What a surprise. If you didn't see that one coming, you're excused from reading this review but you'd probably be best off attending grade school again. it might help. Regardless, you start with only one ability - to go through doors and pick up stuff, and to jump. Okay, that's more like 3 abilities, but they're all small-time, so I counted them for 1/3rd a piece, amounting to 1 full ability. Okay, okay. I'll stop padding the review and start saying useful things. At first you won't have a weapon, but that's solved easily. You have a life bar and a level bar. Level in this game isn't what it is in roleplaying games - i.e. being a gauge of personal progress. It's basically how well you can handle the weapon you're currently holding. You collect yellow triangles which are dropped by fallen enemies to raise your level. If you actually raise it with a level, your weapon will be even more dangerous to those around you. There are multiple weapons around - and they all have their use for specific situations. Though - if you wanted to, you could probably run through the entire game using just one weapon. The gameplay is side-scrolling sometimes-frantic action. The cutscenes and interactions add depth to the otherwise simple gameplay. There will be many enemies to slay - all with different behavioural patterns, and many locations to discover. Puzzles to solve, things to kill. There will be bosses, sub-bosses and super-bosses. There might even be mega-bosses, but I haven't finished the game yet, so that's a possibility I hope I'm right about. Mega-whatever is mega-cool. The game uses VGA graphics, the old-school type, and has cutesey characters and cutesey enemies. To be honest, it just oozes Japanese style, and as a fan of that style I can only say that the graphics look awesome. Though I don't like the player character sprite, I love all the other ones. Especially Balrog. He rocks. Possibly even out. Yes. Balrog rocks out. Complementing the graphics, which are simple yet stylish, we have the music and sound effects. They are not that amazing, but they don't distract and they do occasionally add to the atmosphere. In general, the graphics and sound are fit for the task, but nothing to write home about. Not unless you're a fanboy. *drool* The story is simple - but what's most amazing about this game is the way it unfolds. Timing, dramatic scenes and ooh/aah moments are well-used, and keeps you playing the game for quite some time. The story is engrossing and will make you want more and more. While the game at times give you little to no direction as to where you need to go - simply exploring some more will always get you back on the right track. Thankfully, there are lots of save points, so you can always retry from your last save. The only problem lies in the fact that there is only *one* savepoint. I just saved over my old one, and that sucks. Now I have to play the entire game again from the start. How sore my heart is *goes and plays the game until sun-up* -- voh --
